What prompted this project?

A personal problem

I’m a figure skater who likes to train even when on vacation. Recently I went to Austin, Tx with my dad and tried to reserve freestyle ice, but the rink’s calendar and booking system were so confusing that I chose a different rink.

The idea

I thought it would be easier to have one app that I can reserve practice ice at any rink to avoid interacting with some ice rinks poorly designed websites.

Early Version of the app

Booking app for everything including skating

This started as challenge to design a booking site within 24 hours. The idea was to book an appointment with any business or service, but that was very unrealistic, so I niched down and focused on Figure skating only.

Searching for Rinks

Modified Version of the app

The app home opens to Google Map for ice rinks, so skaters can immediately find what they’re looking for.

UI reflects skating aesthetics

The cool blue color reflects the cold and the subtle loop background represents the figures on the ice.

Skaters save time when they arrive at the rink

Instead of standing in line, they pay online

All rinks require a standard safety waiver. After they sign it and pay in the app, it generates a QR code to scan at the rink.

Transferring info to the rink

The QR code stores the signed waiver and payment info. The skater scans the QR code when entering the rink, skipping the line and going straight to practice.

Outcome

Pitched My Idea to USFS and ISU

The only way this app could work in real life is if all rinks use it. That requires a reputable source to promote it. I emailed the major skating organizations to pitch my idea, but my email was rejected as spam.
